Veganism: An Opinion Piece!

Ava Crawford, Staff Reporter

Have you ever wondered what vegan foods taste like?  My family and I are vegan. Today I am going to tell you some facts about being vegan.  Veganism is a plant-based lifestyle, which excludes meat, eggs, and dairy.  There are many ways to embrace a vegan lifestyle.

One way is to eliminate dairy. When you look at a carton of milk, what do you think?  Do you think “Hmm I’m looking for a healthy drink so maybe I should drink some milk!” Well if you think that, you may need to do some research for yourself. Did you know, we are the only species that drinks milk after we are done being nursed from our mothers?  All our lives, we have been told that milk has a lot of calcium in It and that it’s good for us. When it comes to dairy, there are different options like almond milk, coconut milk, and soy milk.  We all know, people love cheese!  A vegan substitute for cheese is non-dairy cheese, often made from nuts, and it’s delicious! Also, when we want a sweet treat there are tons of flavors of dairy-free ice cream!

Another way to live a vegan lifestyle is to eliminate meat.  Steak, chicken, pork, fish, and eggs are not the healthiest options to eat in my opinion.  If you’re wondering what we use for a substitute for meat, here’s your answer, we use tofu. It is a plant-based product for people that don’t want to eat animals and you may be thinking “tofu… gross!” Tofu can be used in so many different ways. We use this as our meat in spaghetti, Mexican food, Chinese, pretty much whatever we eat. We don’t always eat tofu, we also eat lots of vegetables and fruit too. There are different kinds of foods that are a lot healthier for you that don’t come from an animal.

Here are some foods that ARE very healthy for you to eat.  Fruits, veggies, salads, nuts,  beans, different breads, and rice.

Sometimes being vegan can be hard if you don’t know what to eat, but once you understand what foods are available, it’s easy to eat vegan.  You’ll even see how vegans can eat the same meals that non- vegans do, even when eating out. For example, next time you go to a restaurant or have a choice to order a bean burrito at Taco Bell,  just ask for no cheese. While eating this way, you’re not only saving animals but helping the environment and your health.
